About me - Silke Gerdes, midwife in Hanover

I have been a registered midwife since 1998 and since then I have worked primarily as a freelance midwife in Hamburg (Altona + St. Pauli), and for almost seven years in the delivery room of the Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg. Although I would have liked to do my midwifery training in Hanover, the training position at the Finkenau Women's Clinic lured me from Hanover to Hamburg in 1995. There I met the love of my life, had two daughters and settled down.

Immediately after my training, I worked for a few months in Hamburg's twin city León/Nicaragua, both in the clinic there and together with the "Clínica móvil", which looks after the rural population.

From 2001-2007, in addition to my freelance work, I was employed as a midwife in the delivery room of the Marienkrankenhaus.

Since 2002 I have cooperated with the family midwife project "ADEBAR" to ensure good midwifery care for women of all social and cultural backgrounds.

Since 2007 I have been working entirely on a freelance basis again and, together with my colleague Annabelle Merkord, I rented a midwife's room in an Altona gynaecologist's practice and specialized in prenatal care/counselling/courses and postnatal care. Furthermore, the family midwives from "ADEBAR" have been able to offer free and uncomplicated social counseling for pregnant women in our area.  In June 2011, we decided to move back to Hanover for family reasons.

Further training

I can provide advice and support based on the latest research. I regularly undergo further training and fulfil the training recommendations of the Hamburg Midwives' Association. I have also acquired certificates in the following areas:

  • Pelvic floor and incontinence training
  • Homeopathy

I can offer support in both English and Spanish.

From the winter semester 2011/2012, I will also start the 4th semester of the "Bachelor of Sc. in Midwifery" course in order to gain a theoretical foundation for my many years of professional experience.
